My digital camera, just returned to me from a friend who had borrowed it to take pictures of his little girl’s Communion service, has developed a fault.
Through the viewfinder and on the screen, everything looks fine, but when the picture is taken and stored, the image is pale and has stripes appearing over it.
After a quick search, I found out that it’s most likely a problem with the CCD (Charge Coupled Device) — put more simply, the chip that controls the image capture.
I then went to the Canon website to see if there was anything I could do to fix this problem myself (I didn’t hold out much hope to be honest), only to find that this is a known problem, and if confirmed, can be repaired at Canon’s cost. Simply find a local service centre on their website, hand in the camera, and then sit back and wait for it to be fixed.
I’ll try and drop my camera in this weekend, and fingers-crossed, will have a fully functioning camera again in the near future.

I had an S1 IS whose detector went totally dark. All you could see on the LCD/viewfinder was the OSDs.
Called Canon, they arranged for a shipping label to send it to them at their expense, and the 2nd day’ed it back to me. Less than 10 days including Thanksgiving and I have it back, fully functional.
Kudos to Canon!
