It's getting to that time of year again when everyone is looking forward to some summer sunshine. Here at The Green Insurance Company we’re dedicated to making it easy for people to be green. Take a look at our Green Summer Guide for tips to reduce your carbon-footprint as you travel this summer.
Long haul flights are one of the world's biggest contributors to CO2 emissions, but there are eco alternatives to flying half way across the world. You could even consider a holiday right here in the UK, there are many fantastic holiday destinations that are just a short distance away, why fork out for a flight abroad this year when you could be a short drive away from a great holiday? Or you could be greener still and take the train.
When you're choosing where to stay while on your travels, why not check out which hotels have green credentials. Many hotels now adopt environmentally friendly practices such as reducing waste, water consumption, encouraging guests to re-use their towels, using recycled materials, and powering the place with renewable energy.
A packed lunch is always a great way to reduce your carbon emissions if you avoid packaging. If you opt for a fresh packed lunch you could save yourself money, and have a healthier meal.
Pack lightly. The heavier a plane is the more fuel it needs to get off the ground, and the more CO2 that will be emitted. Do you really need all those clothes and shoes? Remember you can wash your clothes abroad.
If you're going to be driving this summer, it may be an idea to protect yourself against any unforeseen breakdowns. The Green Insurance Company now offer European Breakdown Cover starting from only £57.95. We'll happily offset the CO2 emissions of any breakdown vehicles used to assist you. If you're renting a car while you're away, consider your options. Do you really need a big 4x4 off-road vehicle? Renting a smaller car will leave you more money so spend on other things on holiday, and will also cause less damage to the environment.
Remember the beach is for everyone, and it's everyone's responsibility to keep it in pristine condition. Coastal areas are home to numerous plants, animals and birds, many of which require beaches for nesting. If everyone takes the responsibility to not litter, the beaches will continue to look fantastic and be a source of fun and enjoyment for everyone for years to come. We are delighted to be in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society, making a donation to their 'Beachwatch' programme for every Pet Insurance policy we sell; helping to keep UK beaches in pristine condition.
Avoid buying travel guide books that quickly become outdated. Research your trip online at travel web sites, and print out only the necessary pages. Only 18% of guidebooks printed annually are recycled.
